The Venice Charter marks a transition in the protection and recognition of the territorial-landscape system as an asset to be conserved, no longer as a “framework” accompanying the conservation of the monument, but as an element which is nevertheless a manifestation and testimony of a civilizational value. This new identity of the territory therefore allows a critical reflection on today’s landscape context, to pay attention also to the settlement structure, the result of transformations over time which are historical evidence and urban planning quality. The principle then finds application and confirmation in the case study, which, although of modest extent, is the bearer of a cultural value: the historical founding route of the ancient via Pisana (in the internal portion of the municipality of Lastra a Signa). The urban-architectural typology is configured as a peri-urban fringe, the result of historical-territorial modifications and variations that have occurred over time, which today gives it a precise connotation. The deposits of time and the elements of historical interest that characterize it today are substantial components for a critical-interpretative reading of the existing, also for a desirable valorisation of the route, to reinterpret the evolution of the urban structure by re-establishing the link of continuity with past.
