This article examines transmodernity as the symbolic framework within which new formulations of selfhood and community challenge consolidated worldviews. By mapping key discourses within the transmodern scenario, the study highlights their counter-hegemonic potential vis-à-vis modern representations of reality. Specifically, it analyzes how major effects of globalization – namely spatial displacement, virtuality, and fragmentation – drive a traumatic dislocation of social space. Ultimately, the paper demonstrates how these transmodern reconfigurations of space and community fundamentally destabilize dominant modern discourses.

Abstract

This article examines transmodernity as the symbolic framework within which new formulations of selfhood and community challenge consolidated worldviews. By mapping key discourses within the transmodern scenario, the study highlights their counter-hegemonic potential vis-à-vis modern representations of reality. Specifically, it analyzes how major effects of globalization – namely spatial displacement, virtuality, and fragmentation – drive a traumatic dislocation of social space. Ultimately, the paper demonstrates how these transmodern reconfigurations of space and community fundamentally destabilize dominant modern discourses.
