The oldest sermons in a romance language – the «Sermoni Limosini», the «Homilies d’Organyà», the «Homilies de Tortosa», the «Sermoni Subalpini», the vernacular sermons of Maurice de Sully – all date around the second half of the 12th century (discounting the so-called sermon «of Valenciennes»). The essay offers a comparative analysis of the texts, focussing on the structure of both the collections as a whole, and of the individual sermons, and discussing their style and the occurrence of bilingualism.
