In recent decades, a «revisionist» historiography focused on late Habsburg and post-Habsburg Europe has emerged. This essay presents some of its most significant findings, discussing them in light of earlier interpretive insights. In particular, it examines the impact of the Habsburg collapse and its legacies, the transformation of nationalisms and their social impact, and the reconfiguration of the relationship between politics and economics. It then assesses the usefulness of these interpretive perspectives for understanding post-Habsburg history between 1918 and 1938, from the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy to the National Socialist annexation of Austria.
