Il Caio Gracco di Vincenzo Monti tra Alfieri e Chenier

Da sempre interessata al rapporto tra intellettuali e potere, con questo articolo la Turchi, oltre a ricostruire l’intricato percorso editoriale della tragedia composta da Vincenzo Monti, mette in rilievo la funzione da essa svolta in un momento cruciale dell’età napoleonica. In questa prospettiva sono notevolissimi i mutamenti apportati dall’autore al Caio Gracco nel passaggio dalla prima alla seconda edizione. Oltre a ciò, il testo è studiato nei suoi rapporti con la tradizione tragica a lui più o meno vicina, in particolare con le tragedie alfieriane e con il Caïus Gracchus di Marie-Joseph Chénier. Si tratta di un confronto che per un verso consente di cogliere ancor meglio la componente celebrativa dell’opera di Monti e dall’altra diventa occasione per ricostruire un capitolo poco esplorato della ricezione europea di Vittorio Alfieri, ovvero dell’intrinseco legame, anche teorico, tra il teatro del drammaturgo francese e quello del maggiore poeta tragico italiano. Always interested in the relations between intellectuals and power, with this article Turchi, besides reconstructing the intricate publishing history of the tragedy composed by Vincenzo Monti, shows the function it played in a crucial moment of the Napoleonic era. In this context, the changes which the author made to his Caio Gracco between the first and second edition are of great interest. Also, the text has been studied in its relations with the tragic tradition more or less close to him, especially with Alfieri's tragedies and with the Caïus Gracchus of Marie-Joseph Chénier. This is a comparison which, on the one hand, lets one grasp even better the celebratory element in Monti's work, and on the other hand is an opportunity to rediscover a chapter which has been little explored, that of how Vittorio Alfieri was received in Europe, in other words, the intrinsic bond, theoretical as well, between the theatre of the French dramatist and that of Italy's greatest tragic poet.
