Social dominance molds cuticular and egg chemical blends in a paper wasp. We have demonstrated that, contrary to the widely accepted view, dominance, rather than fertility, determines chemical signatures in Polistes wasps. Dominant individuals are characterized by a particular GC profile of the hydrocarbons of their cuticle (and of their laid eggs) with respect to subordinate (but with still developed ovaries) individuals of the same colonies.

Abstract
Social dominance molds cuticular and egg chemical blends in a paper wasp. We have demonstrated that, contrary to the widely accepted view, dominance, rather than fertility, determines chemical signatures in Polistes wasps. Dominant individuals are characterized by a particular GC profile of the hydrocarbons of their cuticle (and of their laid eggs) with respect to subordinate (but with still developed ovaries) individuals of the same colonies.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
