ABSTRACT This paper provides a way to deal with issues related to Design for Reliability using Axiomatic Design. A theoretical approach is studied, starting from the traditional theory of Axiomatic Design, in order to help designers to deal with the reliability aspects in a systematic and friendly way. Aim of this work is to study the theory of Reliability using and developing axioms and theorems of Axiomatic Design. With the Reliability Matrix, the aspects related to the management of the reliability of series and parallel mechanical systems/components are analyzed (Axiomatic Design for Reliability). This kind of approach shows how Axiomatic Design can be integrated with other design methodologies (e.g. with reliability techniques), providing a better management and an easier understanding of the project right from the beginning.
