The paper introduces a numerical shape finding procedure for very thin continuos shells: an assigned loading distribution is applied on a point-wise suspended membrane, which, after its deformation, is inverted to give the geometry of a continuous shell. The procedure is an extension of previous ones, introduced for gridshells, to the continuum case. In the past it has been employed in empirical way by several designers. The geometrically nonlinear static analysis of the membrane is carried out taking account of finite rotations. Finally, the structural analysis of the shell, including stability aspects, is performed for checking and controlling the membranal behaviour of the structure, which is attained.

Abstract
The paper introduces a numerical shape finding procedure for very thin continuos shells: an assigned loading distribution is applied on a point-wise suspended membrane, which, after its deformation, is inverted to give the geometry of a continuous shell. The procedure is an extension of previous ones, introduced for gridshells, to the continuum case. In the past it has been employed in empirical way by several designers. The geometrically nonlinear static analysis of the membrane is carried out taking account of finite rotations. Finally, the structural analysis of the shell, including stability aspects, is performed for checking and controlling the membranal behaviour of the structure, which is attained.I documenti in FLORE sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
