The plunger is a very critical point for the operation of hyper-compressors. To obtain a long life for packing rings it is necessary to select very hard materials for the plunger. As a consequence of the special materials used, the plunger results to be very brittle. To guarantee a safe operation it is necessary to have a perfect alignment to avoid bending stress that could cause the plunger failure. The effects of the whole system, including packing rings and supporting crossheads, are analyzed with a multi-body dynamic simulation to evidence the worst loads acting on the plunger. This allows to verify the capability of such a critical component during abnormal operating conditions of the machine.
