Nicotiana tabacum clones tolerant to atrazine (atrazine-adapted) were isolated to study the effect of the herbicide in non-photoautotrophic conditions in in vitro tissue cultures. The aim of this work was to analyze whether the toxic effect of atrazine was limited to photosynthesis inhibition or, as shown for diuron, influenced also respiration. The data reported demonstrate an inhibitory effect of atrazine on respiration in the selected and unselected clones. Three mechanisms possibly responsible for trazine tolerance in our system were investigated, i.e. cell wall thickening, detoxification by the enzyme glutathione-S-transferase, or induction od alternative oxidative processes.
