The constant research to improve rolling stock performances, in terms of safety and reliability, has allowed the installation, onboard the most recent vehicles, of diagnostic systems for operation monitoring. The ETR 500 electro-train is endowed with a complex onboard diagnostic system of which the use, as far as maintenance is concerned, poses numerous objective difficulties for maintenance personnel. This article proposes both a diagnostic data management methodology and a valid instrument to achieve an immediate benefit in the maintenance activity execution. An exhaustive data analysis has allowed to draw useful indications to improve the diagnostic system itself.

Abstract
