Research on some Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl. stands in Tuscany (Central Italy). - The authors studied two stands of Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl. that were recently found in Eastern Tuscany (at Sargiano near Arezzo and at Lucignano). After some basic considerations on the presence of Q. petraea in central Italy, they list the areas in Tuscany where the species has been found. The authors describe the stands at Sargiano and Lucignano in detail and then present a geobotanical analysis. The 10 surveys show that the stands are floristically similar to those at Gubbio (Umbria) and share fewer similarities with those located southwest of Siena. The presence of species such as Physospermum comubiense, Laurus nobilis, Carpinus betulus, Malus florentina, etc. appears significant, while the nearly total absence of Quercus pubescens can be considered a noteworthy feature. The analyses have revealed the peculiar nature of the stands and their moderately mesophilic or nearly meso-hygrophilic bioclimatic character.
