The present study was designed to examine the relationship between patients admitted to hospital for cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and biometeorological indices. This kind of relationship has not been widely studied in our country. We tried a new approach by introducing the term "Discomfort Day", defined as a day which causes an impact on a specific disease in relation to threshold values of environmental parameters. The results pointed out that the Apparent Temperature index has a strong impact on the number of admissions during summer. In particular the treshold of reference for the risk f Myocardial Infarction in men under 65 has been found to be higher than that of older men, for whom an inferior number of hours of discomfort were necessary in a Discomfort Day in order to increase the possibility of admission. We also found a strong relationship between Angina pectoris admissions and moderate cold discomfort, evaluated using the NWCT (New U.S./Canada wind Chill Temperature) index, especially in autumn and spring.
