In areas with clay soils of Central Italy a new interest in sulla (Hedysarum coronarium L.) is arisen: for this forage crops different roles from the traditional hay utilization are foreseen. In a comparative study, in a coastal environment near Livorno (Northern Tuscany), two different ecotypes (the local “Nugola” and “Teramo” from Central Italy) and two certified Italian cultivars (“Grimaldi” and “Sparacia”) were tested. Data collection interested some productive and ecophysiological characteristics: DM and seed production, Leaf Area Index, plant biomass distribution, vegetation structure. Obtained results permitted a characterization of studied varieties, providing also important information regarding different management possibilities.
