Abstract Two families of Treg cells have been described and named "naturally occurring" and "adaptive" regulatory T cells. The naturally occurring Treg cells arise in the thymus, where they achieve their complete functional maturation, whereas the adaptive Treg cells derive from the thymus too, but achieve their functional maturation in the periphery. This review discusses the phenotype and the functional features of the human naturally occurring CD25+ regulatory thymocytes.
