The effect of cyclodextrins and chitosan, separately or in combination, on the dissolution properties and permeability through intestinal epithelial cells (Caco-2) of glyburide, (an oral hypoglycemic agent subject to incomplete and variable bioavailability) has been evaluated. When using the carriers together a possible competition effect has been observed in solubility studies and, by contrast, a synergistic effect was revealed in permeation experiments.

Abstract

The effect of cyclodextrins and chitosan, separately or in combination, on the dissolution properties and permeability through intestinal epithelial cells (Caco-2) of glyburide, (an oral hypoglycemic agent subject to incomplete and variable bioavailability) has been evaluated. When using the carriers together a possible competition effect has been observed in solubility studies and, by contrast, a synergistic effect was revealed in permeation experiments.
