This essay reconstructs the essential aspects of the thirteenth century debate on matter, considering in particular the question of the knowability of matter by God, and the presence in the divine mind of a specific idea of matter, other from that of the compound. The authors considered are Albert the Great, Bonaventure of Bagnoregio, Henry of Ghent and Thomas Aquinas. The recognition of the presence of a specific idea of matter in the mind of God is implied by the idea of giving to the matter a own act indipendent to the form.
