The paper discusses the cracking pattern in an Old Italian palace and proposes a diagnosis of the origin of the actual damage state. The diagnosis aims at identifying a proper and effective retrofitting. The analyzed building, that dates back to the sixteenth century, is a rectangular masonry building (dimensions: length 34 m and width 31 m) located in Piancastagnaio (South Tuscany, Italy). The building exhibits a serious and variegated vertical and horizontal cracking pattern mainly affecting the Southern and Eastern façades. Due to the damage, the Palace was evacuated by the Public Authorities during the eighties of the last century. In this paper, by the use of the finite element technique and of the limit analysis, an interpretation is provided of the causes of the actual damage and a discussion on the procedure adopted in order to assess the origin of the damage is reported. Finally, a proposal for an experimental in-situ survey is presented.

Abstract
Finally, a proposal for an experimental in-situ survey is presented.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
