This research study proposes to verify the psychometric properties of the AAS, APS and MAC-R scales in the Italian version of the MMPI-2. Aspects of validity were studied by comparing the results of 406 male subjects from the general population with 116 male subjects having a history of abuse of psychoactive substances. Data processing focused on the verification of statistical significance of the differences among the averages, in addition to the calculation of various indexes of accuracy in the classification of subjects. The discriminatory effectiveness of the three scales was rather high. AAS appeared to have the highest discriminatory power, followed by MAC-R and APS. The results give evidence of substantial usefulness of the three scales in identifying subjects who have a history of substance abuse. There were indications of increased effectiveness when the three scales were used together.
