Even the simplest masonry structures are extremely difficult to describe in terms of their mechanical characteristics as they are composed of the most different materials, so that the result is hardly definable as deterministic. A further difficulty in the study of the dynamic behaviour of masonry structures is their extremely limited resistance to traction, which induces the presence of pronounced non linearities in the numerical model. Masonry may therefore be idealised as a disordered material, in the sense that its mechanical characteristics may satisfactorily be described by means of a random field. A Galerkin approach may be usefully applied to the study of such problem. The basic idea of the present work is to exploit the modal reduction method in order to write the non-linear equations of motions in principal co-ordinates.

Abstract
Even the simplest masonry structures are extremely difficult to describe in terms of their mechanical characteristics as they are composed of the most different materials, so that the result is hardly definable as deterministic. A further difficulty in the study of the dynamic behaviour of masonry structures is their extremely limited resistance to traction, which induces the presence of pronounced non linearities in the numerical model. Masonry may therefore be idealised as a disordered material, in the sense that its mechanical characteristics may satisfactorily be described by means of a random field. A Galerkin approach may be usefully applied to the study of such problem. The basic idea of the present work is to exploit the modal reduction method in order to write the non-linear equations of motions in principal co-ordinates.I documenti in FLORE sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
