From 1987 to 1991, 45 hepatic resections (of which 18 were major) were performed in 41 patients for treatment of metastases from colorectal carcinoma. The median lollo IV-UP period was 26.8 months. The overall actuarial 3.)ear survival rate was 33.7%; it was 57.1% after treatment of metachronous metastases and 20% after treatment of synchronous ones; 37.5% for solitary metastases and 16.0% for multiple ones. In our experience three Factors correlated significantly with survival after hepatic resection. They were: a) timing of metastasis diagnosis; b) a number of metastases; c) stage of primary colorectal carcinoma. Survival benefits and the improved quality of life justify surgical treatment of IIepatic metastases due to colorectal carcinoma.
