An appropriate set of boundary conditions which allows application of the FEM to the analysis of arbitrarily complex periodic structures embedded in a stratified medium is discussed. These allow the use of all the potentiality of the FEM without limitations as to the geometry or material properties of the scatterer.

Abstract
