Intercalazioni vulcanoclastiche e silicee nelle Arenarie del Cervarola del versante orientale di M. Giovi (Firenze)

Volcaniclastic and cherty levels in some Oligo-Miocenic turbiditic formations of the Northern Apennines have been frequently reported, but their stratigraphic position remains in many cases uncertain. In order to acquire further data, a detailed geological mapping of the southern side of Mt. Giovi was carried out and three stratigraphic sections in the Cervarola Sandstones have been measured. The Mt. Giovi area has been chosen for the frequent occurrence of black cherts and for its location close to the base of the Vicchio Marls capping the Cervarola Sandstones. The Cervarola Sandstones have been subdivided informationally in 4 members and particular attention has been paid to the recognition of some key beds.
