Late Cretaceous/pre-oligocene pre-rift folds and detachments in the danakil horst (Eritrea)

The Danakil horst lies between the southern Red Sea and the Danakil depression in the Neogene rift system of East Africa. It exposes a Precambrian basement covered by Middle/Late Jurassic Antalo Lms. sandwiched between Middle Jurassic Adigrat Ss. and Late Cretaceous Amba Aradam Ss. Toward the Danakil depression, the Mesozoic rocks are covered by Oligocene Trap basalts. From Adeilo to Bulo Buye, north-central Danakil horst, we have collected field evidence of horizontal movements, witnessed by detachments affecting the Mesozoic cover, diffuse mesoscopic and regional strike-slip faults, and folds which involve both the sedimentary cover and its basement.
