Surface bed material sampling has been carried out in almost the entire length of the Tanaro Rivcr from the confluence with the Po River (north-western ltaly). Grain size distributions show a high degree of bimodality, with one mode in the sand range and one mode in the gravel range The two modes are are clearly separated due to the almost completely lack of sediments in the granular range -2<phi<1 5. Statistical inference of sample data suggests that the grain mixtures can be considered as the sum of two normal distributions having different mean but the same variance. Gravel and sand distributions display different spatial variabilities: in the former downstream fining occur, in the latter no net tendencies are apparent. The proposed approach provides a better insight of the spatial distribution of the sediment sizes along the river.

Abstract

Surface bed material sampling has been carried out in almost the entire length of the Tanaro Rivcr from the confluence with the Po River (north-western ltaly). Grain size distributions show a high degree of bimodality, with one mode in the sand range and one mode in the gravel range The two modes are are clearly separated due to the almost completely lack of sediments in the granular range -2
