This paper presents a study on the performances of an experimental submerged groin system at Marina di Ronchi (Italy). The behaviour of the protection system under the action of a severe storm is described. The submerged beach and the shoreline were monitored by detailed bathymetric surveys. The near-shore hydrodynamics concerning waves, wave-generated current and the initial sedimentation erosion pattern were simulated by numerical models. The results obtained by means of the numerical simulations together with the field monitoring allow a better insight into the hydrodynamics and the related morphodynamics processes.
