We present wave-flume experiments on gravel nourishment offshore a rubble mound breakwater. The original motivation of the experiments was to investigate the use of nourishment in order to control the incoming wave energy. The experiments have shown that, under the tested waves, the gravel moves rapidly shoreward with unexpected capability to filtrate through the breakwater against a mean water flux induced by the piling-up. The stones of the armour layer experienced a complete loss of stability due to the effects of gravel filtration.

Abstract
We present wave-flume experiments on gravel nourishment offshore a rubble mound breakwater. The original motivation of the experiments was to investigate the use of nourishment in order to control the incoming wave energy. The experiments have shown that, under the tested waves, the gravel moves rapidly shoreward with unexpected capability to filtrate through the breakwater against a mean water flux induced by the piling-up. The stones of the armour layer experienced a complete loss of stability due to the effects of gravel filtration.I documenti in FLORE sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
