A discrete model for the analysis of masonry structures is presented. It is based on the use of rigid blocks separated by deformable interfaces. In particular, the interfaces are modelled as plane cushions of no-tensile springs with respect to the normal stresses, and as elastic – perfectly plastic elements with respect to shear forces. The model is used to analyze two benchmark structures, namely a circular arch subjected to self-weight and an increasing point load and a dry masonry wall subjected to inclined body forces. In both examples a good agreement with analytical and experimental results is found.

Abstract
A discrete model for the analysis of masonry structures is presented. It is based on the use of rigid blocks separated by deformable interfaces. In particular, the interfaces are modelled as plane cushions of no-tensile springs with respect to the normal stresses, and as elastic – perfectly plastic elements with respect to shear forces. The model is used to analyze two benchmark structures, namely a circular arch subjected to self-weight and an increasing point load and a dry masonry wall subjected to inclined body forces. In both examples a good agreement with analytical and experimental results is found.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
