Fibrocapsa japonica Toriumi & Takano (Raphidophyceae) was detected for the first time in the Western Mediterranean Sea. In particular, it resulted the dominant species in surface turbulent waters of a cyclonic eddy. Its distribution, together with nutrient and photoprotective pigment concentrations, suggests surface photoacclimation and an opportunistic strategy of nutrient exploitation.
