We here describe the principle of operation and the performances of a comb generator designed to cover the 20 MHz – 3 GHz frequency range and satisfying the basic requirements for application as a reference E-field source, when used to feed an appropriate transmitting antenna. Log-periodic antennas provide adequate gain and bandwidth for such application. Nowadays several commercial models can cover the decade of interest here, i.e. 300 MHz to 3 GHz. However they suffer from the ambiguity originated from the motion of the phase-centre with frequency. Guidance is here offered in this respect showing how the appropriate antenna parameter (gain for transmission, antenna calibration factor for reception) can be derived from the corresponding free-space calibration data.
