Abstract

Gold adsorbates of the dodecamanganese(III, IV) single-molecule magnet (SMM) [Mn12O12( L)(16)(H2O)(4)] where L= 16-(acetylthio) hexadecanoate have been prepared and investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The successful imaging of Mn-12 molecules by STM represents a first step toward the magnetic addressing of individual SMMs and the development of molecule-based devices for magnetic information storage
