When considering the question of the ontology of art, two approaches prevail to¬day: an essentialist approach, which aspires to define the invariant properties of eve¬ry artwork, and a functionalist approach, according to which an artwork's properties are contingent and dependent on symbolic practices. The static, intensionalist, and descriptivist ontology of the former approach is well exemplified by A. Danto; the dy¬namic, extentionalist, and constructivist ontology of the latter approach, by N. Goodman. After a criticism mainly centered on Danto's view, the author suggests a definition of work of art able to exceed the opposition between the two models.
