Abstract: This article describes the figure of the Canadian surgeon Norman Bethune (1822-1892) and his contact with the founder of the Red Cross. The essential stages of the personal and professionalbiography of Bethune are reconstructed and how he came to take care of the wounded soldiers after the battle of Solferino (24 June, 1859). In his Souvenir, the same Henry Dunant attests the contribution of the Canadian surgeon. The article provides, moreover, an exhaustive iconographic complement of that period, useful to visualize some of the places of the professional biography of Bethune; in his genealogy one nephew of his is also highlighted similarly in the history of the medicine and military surgery.
