La «critica verbale» degli Esercizi e l’interpretazione

1) Enza Biagini (nome noto di V. Sabelli Biagini) La «critica verbale» degli Esercizi e l’interpretazione in «Ermeneutica letteraria», Interpretazioni di Gianfranco Contini, VI, 2010, pp. 17-35. Il contributo mette al centro dell'attenzione l'«universo dei segni», ora alquanto in ombra e che Contini ha praticato con l'acume e la sapienza che si riconosce al suo modo peculiare di leggere testi e documenti. In quest'ottica, si è trattato di imboccare un tracciato utile a far riaffiorare alcuni aspetti in rilievo del percorso storico e teorico che ha visto l'«esercizio di lettura», l'explication de textes, l'interpretazione e la «critica immanente» crescere in ambiti segnati da una comune temperie, in cui la filologia e la critica hanno condiviso terreni collegati da ponti aperti ad andirivieni talvolta spericolati, ma innovativi e che corrispondono ai maestri (Auerbach, Spitzer, Barthes...) che hanno saputo formulare la lezione esemplare di quell'ermeneutica letteraria consegnata da Contini ai suoi ben noti «esercizi di lettura». Ma l'ottica non è tutta rivolta al passato: in chiusura del saggio ci si chiede se, attualmente, la letteratura non richieda più letture à ras du texte. In realtà, quello che emerge è che la letteratura stessa sta diventando strumento di lettura agli occhi dei nuovi esegeti e di quanti si stanno aprendo ad altri obiettivi e si scoprono interessati all'universo, alla natura e alla cultura in quanto testi, da leggere e interpretare, alla stregua di quei «maestri della critica verbale» evocati da Contini. The contribution brings to the centre of our attention the “universe of signs”, now considerably in the shade and which Contini practiced with the acumen and wisdom that are acknowledged to his unusual way of interpreting texts and documents. Within this perspective, it was a matter of entering a route that was useful for causing the re-emergence of several prominent aspects of the historical and theoretical course that witnessed the growth of the “reading exercise”, the explication de textes, and the interpretation and “immanent criticism” in environments marked by a common climate, in which philology and criticism shared terrains connected by bridges open to sometimes reckless but innovative comings and goings, which correspond to the masters (Auerbach, Spitzer, Barthes, ...) who succeeded in formulating the exemplary lesson of the literary hermeneutics that Contini consigned to his well-known “reading lessons”. But the perspective is not addressed entirely to the past: at the close of the essay, we ask ourselves whether literature at present no longer requires readings à ras du texte. In reality, what emerges is that literature itself is becoming a reading instrument in the eyes of new exegetes and of those who are opening up to other objectives and are discovering themselves to be interested in the universe, in nature and in culture, in that these are texts to be read and interpreted in the same way as those “masters of verbal criticism” evoked by Contini.
