I profumi di Cicerone. Plauto, Mostellaria, 157 ss., Epistulae ad Atticum 2, 1 e la genesi di un'immagine

Cicerone in epist. ad Att. 2, 1, 1, per indicare lo stile elaborato del suo commentarius greco, ricorre alla metafora del trucco e del profumo. L’immagine appare suggerita da un passo della Mostellaria di Plauto, come dimostrano precise consonanze verbali; la metafora è usata in seguito, con una certa frequenza, da Cicerone, che anche nel Brutus assimila la semplicità stilistica dei Commentarii di Cesare ad una donna priva di trucco.
