In this paper, an efficient Adaptive Link Control (ALC) technique is presented with the aim of improving the throughput, and preserving Quality of Service (QoS) requirements in wireless data communication systems. Basically, the proposed access scheme relies on selecting different modulation and coding schemes (MCS) in relation to the channel propagation conditions estimated by means of acknowledgment messages. Further, two different strategies for selecting the most suitable MCS are proposed and optimized. Comparisons with the static rate allocation scheme highlight a remarkable gain even in the presence of heavy tailed traffic conditions and significant user mobility.
