The Expedition of Ebla against Ašdar(um) and the Queen of Harran

Nei testi di Ebla, in particolare per l’ultima fase degli Archivi, sono attestate molte spedizioni militari cui prendono parte re di altri centri, come alleati di Ebla. Nella spedizione contro Ashdarum compare eccezionalmente, come alleato, la regina di Harran, Zugalum. Questo studio si articola in due parti. Nella prima viene dato un contributo decisivo alla definizione del valore semantico di alcuni termini fondamentali del lessico militare eblaita, per cui in precedenza erano state fornite traduzioni assai diverse fra loro e non adeguatamente giustificate, quasi sempre scelte unicamente su base contestuale. I termini, in particolare i controversi TUŠxLÚ.TIL and šu-du8, vengono qui analizzati puntualmente. Partendo dallo studio della totalità dei contesti di occorrenza, sulla base dell’analisi comparativa con le altre lingue semitiche o con il lessico sumerico, si è giunti a stabilirne con precisione il valore semantico, permettendo, così, una maggiore chiarezza nella comprensione dei testi inerenti la pratica bellica, e l’individuazione della sequenza dei suoi momenti nodali. Nella seconda parte, si è cercato di individuare le ragioni che possano giustificare la peculiarità del ruolo di Zugalum. Un ruolo e un potere paragonabili unicamente a quelli di un’altro personaggio femminile della famiglia reale eblaita, la regina di Emar. La mancanza di attestazioni di un re di Harran contemporanee alla vita di Zugalum, parrebbero suggerire che, alla prematura morte del sovrano, la regina di Harran ne avesse assunto il ruolo.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the Ebla texts there are numerous references to many military expeditions, especially in the later phase of the Archives, where foreign kings are mentioned as Ebla allies. Exceptionally, in the expedition against the city of Ashdarum, the mentioned ally is not the king but the queen of the important city of Harran, Zugalum. This article is a twofold study. In the first part a decisive contribution helps clarify the semantic value of some central terms of the Eblaite military lexicon, which had previously received various interpretations, mostly just on the basis of contextual elements. All the occurrences of the chosen terms have been here collected and studied, and on the basis of a comparative analysis with other Semitic languages and with Sumerian lexicon, a new interpretation has been suggested, in particular for the controversial TUŠxLÚ.TIL and šu-du8, allowing a better understanding of the related texts. It has also been possible, then, to define the sequence of the crucial phases of military expeditions. In the second part, the figure of Zugalum has been studied in order to understand the peculiarity of her role and power (only comparable with that of the queen of Emar, another woman belonging to the Eblaite royal family). The lack of occurrences of a king of Harran in the texts contemporary to her life may suggest that Zugalum, at her husband’s premature death, had exceptionally taken his role.
