Romantic appropriation of Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Henry V, King John, and the national identity

The essay explores, through an analysis of John Philip Kemble's performances of Henry V, Coriolanus and King John, the ways in which Shakespeare was used, re-used, and appropriated, on the London stage for the defence of national identity, particularly around 1798-1803, in the face of the feared Napoleonic invasion.
