The present study focused on the formal relationship that links the inner vault of Santa Maria del Fiore and the Baptistery of San Giovanni showing exceptional similarity that unites two seemingly different works. The first, late-Gothic, almost universally recognized as the result of an approach that takes advance of building the fifth on acute basis (5°) and supported by an octagonal structure invisible with ribs, the second, less investigated and indefinitely more ancient, which seems to be the basic model that had inspired Filippo Brunelleschi to create the first. Documents the work of the cathedral and the works of biographers such as Giorgio Vasari, Antonio di Tucci Manetti offer us compelling data base from which recreate the original data which had inspired the genius of Filippo Brunelleschi.

Abstract
The present study focused on the formal relationship that links the inner vault of Santa Maria del Fiore and the Baptistery of San Giovanni showing exceptional similarity that unites two seemingly different works. The first, late-Gothic, almost universally recognized as the result of an approach that takes advance of building the fifth on acute basis (5°) and supported by an octagonal structure invisible with ribs, the second, less investigated and indefinitely more ancient, which seems to be the basic model that had inspired Filippo Brunelleschi to create the first. Documents the work of the cathedral and the works of biographers such as Giorgio Vasari, Antonio di Tucci Manetti offer us compelling data base from which recreate the original data which had inspired the genius of Filippo Brunelleschi.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
