The work aims at studying a knowledge management model that could be useful in the development of a tourism destination local observatory. In particular, the paper tries to define a procedure to collect, analyze and disseminate information on sustainability and competitiveness of the destination. A systemic approach is essential to avoid data fragmentation and to help the different stakeholders to reach an effective sharing of information that can improve both single initiatives and more extensive programs for a sound tourism management. The paper consists of two parts. The first phase of the work will examine some specific issues in each one of aforementioned fields: A) The role of information and knowledge in decision making, when the territorial development is considered. B) Problems and possible solutions for the measurement of tourism competitiveness and sustainability C) A structural and network perspective in the knowledge representation .The design objective is to stress the importance of relations between the different actors of the touristic processes. The second part of the work will present methods to create conceptual models starting from narrations and users information needs descriptions will be discussed.
