This study concerns the flotation tailings obtained from processing of the polymetallic sulfide deposit (Zn. Cu, Pb) of Fenice-Capanne, Southern Tuscany, exploited at least from Etruscan times until to 1985. when the mine was closed. Samples of flotation tailings (from the as well as from 1952's wastes were taken at different depths (0-15, 15-45.45-90 cm) by driving a small diameter pipe vertically through the tailings. Additional samples included the roasting products and a subtle "soil" horizon developed onto the flotation tailings in one basin . Zoning of metal contents along with depth of sampling is evidenced in most samples taken from 1957 ~1984 basins. In particular, top layers are normally enriched in polluting elements with respect to materials at greater depths. This fact can be explained either by upwards capillary migration of pore waters or by leaching of roastings, which may occur along the margins of flotation basins. These features can be reconciled by admitting different degrees of sulfide oxidation, and, consequently, acid production and metal leaching in the 1952 flotation tailings, on one hand, and the 1957-1984 flotation tailings, on the others.the subtle soil formed onto the 1957-1984 flotation tailings contains clay minerals and Fe- and Mn-hydroxides notably enriched in Zn, Mn, Cu, Ni, Cr and As, confirming their relevant role as "mineral traps" for polluting elements through absorption processes
