Nowadays adequacy and sustainability are considered keywords for any activity that concerns “development” issues. One widespread interpretation of these concepts has brought to the fact that farm machinery and other equipment destined to developing countries is often designed to be rough and cheap, although this generally implies low quality of the product in various aspects. Abstract

This interpretation has in several cases turned out to be wrong not only in ethical, but also in economical terms, but still some uncertainty persists. In this communication influence of low product quality on rural mechanization in developing countries is discussed through the analysis of two rural projects in southern Nigeria: the first one consisting in the provision of farm power units to farmer cooperatives and the second one aiming to improve small scale agro-processing
