This work focuses on the characteristics and on the role carried out by the Tourism Destination Observatory (TDO) as destination management tool. We reflect upon the TDO role, with reference to the concept of tourist destination not only meant as a geographical area, characterized by an integrated supply of services and attractions for tourists, but also as a cognitive product which originates from experiential processes and destination development processes. The TDO is analyzed as knowledge management tool, as a change agent, governance tool and development tool of the competitive and sustainable destination. Through the social dialogue facilitation, the TDO is at the centre of a network of formal and informal relations, as well as of a flow of information and knowledge which facilitate the intellectual capital enhancement of the destination. The causes of the still unexpressed potentials of the TDO model are the lack of appropriate competencies about KM techniques and an inadequate collaboration among the operators. This is the future challenge for the Institutions, the businesses and the Research Organizations.
