The Arno Project, a reserach project devoted to develop and test an integrated monitoring system for the Arno river flash flood forecast, was firstly developed by the National Group for Prevention of Hydrogeological Hazards of the National Research Council in 1986. Later it was also funded by the Civil Protection Department and by a specifically conceived Strategical Project of the National Research Council. This paper illustrates the present state and the scientific research and experimental activities of the Arno Project, with particular reference to the application of remote sensing techniques.
