The application refers to an electrolizer wherein the anode electrode is identical to the cathode electrode and the electrocatalyst on either electrode is suitable for both ammonia oxidation and water reduction; said electrolizer allows the on-board generation of a hydrogen:nitrogen mixture to be used as combustion promoter in an internal combustion engine where the primary fuel is either ammonia or any other fossil fuel, such as methane, gasoline and diesel.
