The methods of numerical analysis to evaluate the seismic safety of masonry structures, request the knowledge of the shear strength of the masonry material. The Italian Codes (NTC 2008 and Circolare n.617) allow to determine the shear strength of masonry by both a table of values (indirect method) and mechanical tests (direct method). The direct approach requires appropriate experimental tests on triplets and square panels, as regulated respectively by ASTM 509-2010 and RILEM TC 76-LUM. In the present work, the shear strength, without normal forces, of different masonry specimens is evaluated by the direct approach. The mechanical tests, performed on different types of masonry specimens, were carried out at the “Laboratorio Ufficiale Prove Materiali e Strutture” of the University of Florence, “Dipartimento di Costruzioni e Restauro”.
