A sample of 4148 four-jet events observed m the ALEPH-detector at LEP m 1989 and 1990 is used to test the underlyng gauge group of strong interactions. A fit to the ratios of the "colour factors" Cr, ∆c and Tr, which determine the differential cross sections, yields 3,C/('F = 2.24 + 0 32star -:- 0 24s, sl and 7~/('~ = 0 58 -1:0 17star + 0 23s~st This Is in agreement with the values expected from QCD' ~(/(" v = 2 25 and Tr/('r = 0 375 The non-zero value of ~'c/('r constitutes direct evidence for the existence of the trtple-gluon coupling and excludes anti, abelian gauge theory by more than five standard deviations
