Petrography, X-ray diffraction and chemical analysis are three tecniques that have been used to study the exchange of prehistoric pottery between North-East Sicily and the Aeolinan Islands. The results show that the neolithic some pottery was imported from the mainland into the Aeolian Islands, although there was a fluorishing local pottery industry. In the Middle Bronze Age Aeolian produced pottery enters into a wider distribution trade network in the Tyrrenian Sea and is particularly evident in Milazzo. In the later stages of Middle/Late Bronze Age the local industry becomes dependent upon external sources for pottery raw materials thus reflecting the increasing importance of external cultures in the archipelago.
