The results of a case study (a benchmark) developed as a part of the preliminary activities of the research project “RiSEM” (Italian acronym for Seismic Risk on Monumental Buildings, www.risem.unifi.it) are reported and summarized. The benchmark is aimed at comparing the results offered by different numerical analysis techniques (macro-elements, equivalent frame, finite elements, etc.) in the definition of the behavior under horizontal actions of a series of masonry elements characterized by a deliberately simple geometry. The comparison between the results obtained by different approaches has a twofold purpose: the definitions of the parameters which describe the crisis of the structural elements (in order to be able to further proceed with the developing of simplified numerical models), and the estimate of the epistemic uncertainty, which is related to the different techniques and numerical modeling necessary for the subsequent risk analysis. After a description of the benchmark analysis, the main results obtained by using different numerical analysis techniques are reported and analyzed.
