Volcanic rocks have been used frequently in the construction of historic buildings in central Italy. At Bomarzo Park, a natural outcrops of rhyodacitic boulders inspired the carving of a large number of sculptures into this rocks in the sixteenth century. These sculptures are suffering from alteration processes, mainly related to the high moisture levels of their enviroment. The causes of the alterations and the present conditions of the material have been studied with the aim of understanding the deterioration mechanism.
